Hi Nancy and welcome to the group. I'm so glad you have found us. It's not easy living with Sarcoidosis but it helps to be able to talk with those who have it and know what you are going through. I read your bio on your web page. Some of your symptoms certainly sound like some of ours. Has your doctor actually diagnosed you with Sarcoidosis? You didn't say. What tests have you had? Please post us and introduce yourself. We look forward to getting to know you.

re: hematology visit

2008-02-29 18:33:32

well....the swelling on Noels leg has gotten bigger and is now looking rather discolored....redder than the purple of the other part of her legs so we had to go back to the hematologist yesterday.. she had not seen the lump and wanted to do some checking for herself.

she did about 15 to 20 vials of blood to check for stuff and to type and crossmatch her...and sent her for a deep ultrasound of her leg. Thank You God.....there wasn't a clot in there at this time but they are very worried about it because the blood seems to be moving very slowly through this area and the blood hasn't went into the muscle tissue yet which is good too. but it is still getting bigger and now we have to watch it and if it gets any bigger go back once again.

her platelets were still at 20,000 and if they go any lower she said they will give her a platelet transfusion...I don't know why they can't give her one now but whatever...they know she has hemoptysis and with the bleeding going on in her leg...maybe it would help. she got a large bump where they did her bw and we had to go back and get ice for that...she wasn't a happy camper yesterday i will tell you. plus I can tell she is very scared because she has been lovey....this is breaking my heart to see her like this.

she is very short of breath and cyanotic but we cannot go up on her remodulin now due to her platelets and the bleeding in her leg...what can they do about it.....looks like nothing.

can't make her stay still because thats when you get a clot...keep moving and the damm thing keeps getting bigger....eugh........

you know....It is funny....all the times I have whinned...and then the next thing you know things are getting worse.....I wish sometimes things could even go back to the way they were last month...which wasn't great but a bit better.

on a good note the hematologist was able to speak to the new card without a problem and he said that this platelet level was unexceptable...the good thing is is that he spoke to her on the phone with No problems...ohhh..big difference there from the old one....LOL

oh well..I have to go ..the office will be calling me with the script soon.....hang in and if anyone has ever had to deal with this please email me with any info.

much love celeste

Hi Barbara,

I hope you didn't think I forgot about you. I apologize for the delayed response. I have 2 teenagers and only one computer. By the time it is "my turn" I am usually too tired to write! I have been thinking about you since your first post.

You asked about how we got Sam to take his meds and our experience with flolan. First of all, Sam's rapid improvement on flolan was not typical. Despite being very critical when diagnosed (he had several passing out episodes and stopped breathing) his pressures returned to normal after the first year of treatment. What we know now but didn't know then is that some PH patients (especially children) have more reactive blood vessels and with special testing during the heart cath are classified as "responders" or "non-responders" .Responders (about 20% of cases) will do well with the simplest and oldest drug class called ca channel blockers. These drugs (procardia, norvasc, cardizem) are used to treat regular high blood pressure, but used at much higher doses in PH. So.... to make a long story short, Sam was not tested at diagnosis because he wasn't stable enough, and he was found to be a lucky "responder" at his second cath in New York.

So he is only on the ca channel blocker med (and coumadin) but has never been on any of the newer oral PH meds. Aside from that medical explanation, we also have to believe in the power of prayer and miracles.

So as you have already heard from several other parents, flolan is an adjustment but a lifesaver. Looking back I do wonder how I did deal with everything. You find sources of strength you never knew you had. Bottom line, you are a great mother and I know you will do the best you can as well. And some days you won't be able to make everyone happy but that is ok too.

Another piece of advice, try to lose the guilt. We all have it, I think it is bred into us as mothers. Don't blame yourself for not knowing that your child had PH. It is more common than not for patients to go for years undiagnosed. My son had subtle symptoms for a year or more and I never suspected anything serious (and I am a nurse!)

Jennifer gave you some great tips about pill taking so not much more to add. Another parent gave a tip about using chocolate pudding with mini m&m's added. Once used to that, add the pills and they went down just like the candy! We were fortunate that Sam has never had a problem swallowing pills so we didnt have to get too creative. My child was born "type A" and organized so again I havent had much trouble getting him to comply, he is very regimented about everything in his life. (he usually reminds me of things to do!) But as soon as he turned 13 he became more forgetful, like the rest of us!

I'm sorry to hear about Amy being hospitalized again. I don't know much about the Ventavis but have read posts from other parents and believe chest pain, shortness of breath and stomach upset are common side effects. Hope this issue has gotten better and glad she did not have pneumonia.

One other suggestion, have you joined PHA? It was a lifesaver for me at the time of diagnosis and continues to empower and encourage. You absoulutely have to order the Pulmonary Hypertension Patient's Survival Guide. There are full chapters on testing, medications, children issues, etc....Check the PHA website for more details.

We are all here for you. Although every journey may be different we share the same hope: a cure for all of our children.

Take care,

Linda (Sam's mom)

Hello Celeste,

I have followed your posts and my heart goes out to you for all you and Noel have had to deal with. I am not sure about why your daughter's platelets are so low but do know it is difficult to increase them. "Thrombocytopenia" (low platelets) often occurs secondary to chemotherapy or due to meds used to treat certain viral infections (hepatitis). There are some med options to help the body make more of these cells but unfortunately they can increase blood pressure and worsen heart failure. I wish I could offer more positive info.

You and Noel remain in our thoughts and prayers,

Linda (mom to Sam, age 13 with PPH)

Info in Soc. Security disability

2008-02-28 19:27:55

Social Security has two types of disability benefits. There is RSDI which stands for Retirement, Survivors, Disability Insurance. Then there is SSI which stands for Supplemental Security Income.
RSDI is awarded to anyone who has worked at least 10 quarters. The amount you receive for disability at the time you apply and are approved is the same as if you had actually retired on that day. The amount you receive is based upon the income you had earned. This is the same thing that retirees receive when they retire. This is where that Social Security amount that is deducted from your check every payday that your employer matches goes.
SSI is a welfare program for those who either dont have 10 work quarters or whose earnings while they worked werent sufficient to provide RSDI payments of at least $600 per month. If a person didnt have enough work quarters to qualify for RSDI then they only receive SSI which is about $600 per month. If their earnings didnt provide for sufficient RSDI then the RSDI is supplemented with SSI to bring the Social Security payments up to $600 per month.
In order to qualify for Medicare you must be disabled for at least 2 years. ***Remember SSA can go back up to 6 months prior to the date you applied to establish your time of disability. Those of you who have been approved for RSDI or SSI look over your approvals and see what date they have given you for the start date of disability. They only have to pay you from the date you applied, however if your doctors have documented things appropriately you can backdate your 2 year wait for Medicare by up to 6 months.
People who are receiving any SSI at all are automatically eligible for Medicaid: the State/Federal Insurance program for low income individuals. If you're eligible for RSDI your eligibility for Medicaid depends upon how much income you receive.
The disability qualifications for both programs are the same. Sometimes if SSA can determine at the initial receipt of your application that you are going to be eligible they will approve SSI to tide you over until they can get your RSDI benefits determined. Then when your RSDI benefits are approved they will deduct the amount of SSI you received while you are waiting from your initial benefit amount. It doesnt happen often, but it does happen.

Re: [PHA_Parents] Breathing Problems

2008-02-27 21:55:06

Pam,
The way I see it is that Becky has had three things going on that can
affect breathing- scoliosis, PH and reactive airway disease. I think
you need to have a doctor examine her to separate these issues out. All
of these issues have different treatments, and breathing issues are not
something to mess around with. Perhaps Becky's primary care doctor can
give you some insight and steer you in the right direction of which
specialist you need to see.
Reactive airway disease would be the most immediately treatable of the
three conditions, so I think I would tend to want to check that option
first.
Hope breathing gets better for Becky soon. Breathing problems are scary.

Re: [Sarcoidosis_Support] Anyone had this symptom?

2008-02-27 08:31:23

Joanie,

Yes, I've dealt with the heat, potassium, dehydration, & leg cramps. When you got to the numbness and said your previous heart tests were ok, that was great then, but I would sure get in touch with the doctor now and get checked out again. New problems can come up quickly. Some numbness can be a side effect of different medicines and it can be an indicator of something seriuos too. Girl, get yourself to the doctor!! At this point in life, I'd rather be safe than sorry. He would want to know this.

Breathing Problems

2008-02-27 08:16:52

Hello all,

I need to get some thoughts from you, especially with regard to scoliosis as it affects lungs and breathing.

My daughter, Becky - 17 has been having more problems with breathing lately than usual. Friday and today, she had so much trouble that she needed to lie down on oxygen for at least half the day. The week before she had several bad days.

I am beginning to wonder if her scoliosis is causing this. The last time we went to the regular orthopedic dr. he said that her scoliosis had been getting worse by about a degree a month for the past 8 months previous to that. That was in February, I think. Then, as you may remember, I scheduled her surgery with the orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Hanson for July 17. He had said it was fine to wait until then, and he didn't have any earlier openings anyway.

But Becky herself asked me if I supposed perhaps her scoliosis was continuing to worsen at the same rate and if it could cause these problems. We just saw Dr. Ivy in March, and at that time he said that her PH was not any better, but not any worse - same as the last time he saw her.

Sorry to bother everyone, but I really get scared whenever I think she is having more problems than usual.

Thanks.

Pam (mom to Becky - 17 - severe PH, congenital heart disease, scoliosis, multiple spleens, ADD, anxiety disorder; Johnny - 14; and Laura - 11)

It's me again

Sure hope I get some messages.
Hi everyone....

Anyone had this symptom?

2008-02-26 20:24:55

Hi all,
I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced a symptom that I am suddenly having. First off, I should say that I had a 3-day yard sale over the weekend last weekend (on Thursday, Friday & Saturday from 8:00 in the morning until 3:00 in the afternoon each day). So, I was outside in the heat for 3 days straight, which I know I shouldn't do, but I did stay in the shade pretty much all the time. But just the heat itself, even if I'm in the shade, will get to me.
But, anyway, I was pretty drained on Sunday. Just more worn out than a normal person would be from being out in the heat like that for 3 days. But, I expected that, since Sarc patients can't handle the heat and the sun as well as most people. I am happy to report that I did not break out in a skin rash, though, which I usually do in the heat. And, I have not had any trouble breathing or anything.
But, beginning Sunday night I suddenly started getting really bad leg cramps. I hardly ever suffer with that problem, but for the past couple of nights it has been really bothering me. I wake up and it hurts so bad I have to stand up beside the bed and put pressure down on the bottoms of my feet to relieve the pulling sensation on my calf muscles. Then, even during the day my calf muscles feel tight and as if they might go into a spasm at any moment. My husband said he's heard dehydration can cause this, so maybe I just didn't drink enough liquids during those 3 days while I was sweating and hot so much. I've also heard that a shortage of Potassium in your body can cause this, and I've heard that if you eat a banana every day, you will keep enough potassium in your body to prevent the cramps. So, I bought some bananas and have been eating them, but so far the cramps haven't went away.
But, that's not the main symptom that I am writing this email to ask about. It's another symptom that worries me. For the past few days I have been getting this sensation of numbness that feels as if it travels down my arms and down into my pinky finger. At first it was just my left arm and pinky, but now my right arm is doing it to, but to a lesser degree. It's mainly the outer edge of my forearm that feels tingly and numb, and then my pinky finger and the side of my hand travelling up from my pinky to my wrist is really, really numb and tingly, almost like it's "asleep". My other fingers, and the inner side of my arms don't feel tingly at all.
It worries me because I have heard that people having a heart attack often suffer numbness in their arm, but just back in April when I got my diagnosis of Sarc, they did a bunch of heart tests on me, and she said "Your heart checks out fine." So, I'm thinking it must just be a Sarc-related thing that is going on.
Anyone else ever experienced this?
Joanie

Celeste,

I am sorry to read all that is going on, I am sorry that I was unable to get on here sooner. Just know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and your whole family. My heart goes out to you.

Hi everyone.....well...life is getting to me and I feel like i got kicked in the stomach.

I want to cry...scream.....melt......

I was scared by the sonogram..and Noels leg is still getting bigger in that area not smaller which I had hoped to see by now...

she has also been having terrible headaches in her temples..it is heart breaking....codine often isn't touching it now and even when it does she is asking for another within an hour or two.

she has been very cyanotic...it is hard to see her with her fingernails so dark....we were at the table today and I was taken back by how dark blue they really were....her color does sometimes blow me away...

we have noticed some really big changes in Noel lately. It makes her exhausted to put on her clothes and after she does she will have to lay down with her 02 on....she is really starting to worry because she knows she is getting worse and what if she doesn't get better........

she has a very difficult time stepping up...we don't really have stairs but like into one part of the house and when she has to get into the truck...it is very hard to see her like this. My husband has secured a stretcher just in case we would have to move her when she really cannot walk....at least he thinks of these things....

Noel saw it in the pole barn and she told my oldest daughter that she thought we....Ron and I were grave robbers because we had a stretcher in the shed...she can still keep me laughing..

she has been complaining about her vision and her speech is faultering sometimes....

so with all that is going on .....I had spoken to the hematologist a couple of days ago and she wanted Noels platelets checked right off.....so she couldn't go because of the headaches and today we went....

the count was 27,000 on March 28th and 20,000 today...they called me right away with the results and although the nurse said she didn't think this was the cause of the spontaneous hemmorage in the tissues of her leg....I do feel it probably has something to do with it ..because of the ph meds...like remod which keeps those platelets slippery.

so anyway.....the nurse said they don't have a plan but the hematologist asked her to call me right away with the results.

the hematologist asked me the last time I spoke to her on the phone if I wanted to keep knowing the results.....like esp. if they drop to something like 8,000 which she seems to think they will eventually...

would I want to know....I told her yes....I have been at this so long I need to know every detail and she was happy with that....

they will get back to me...but this is the hardest thing....

we are not doing to well up in the north.....I am shedding a few tears now but I have to get a grip before Noel sees me.........

much love....thanks for being here...celeste

insurance question

2008-02-25 22:06:15

Hi. I have had TOS since about 2002. I had physical therapy through
workers comp for about 6 months and then I wasn't able to get anymore
help. They said I was better even though I'm definately not. I am
still unemployed and wanted to find the best insurance plan to start
physical therapy again. I'm moving from Massachusetts to Florida in a
month or two. I'm not sure what plan I should look for.
Thanks,

Re: [Thoracic Outlet Syndrome] insurance question

2008-02-25 20:02:23

Since you had PT through work comp I assume this was work
related and work comp paid for it. If you have been unable to
work you should have gotten an attorney and filed a work comp
case against your employer and applied for social security
disability.

Top Idiots of 2003

Number One Idiot of 2003

I am a medical student currently doing a rotation in toxicology at the poison control center. Today, this woman called in very upset because she caught her little daughter eating ants. I quickly reassured her that the ants are not harmful and there would be no need to bring her daughter into the hospital. She calmed down and at the end of the conversation happened to mention that she gave her daughter some ant poison to eat in order to kill the ants. I told her that she better bring her daughter into the emergency room right away.

Here's your sign, lady. Wear it with pride.

Number Two Idiots of 2003

Early this year, some Boeing employees on the airfield decided to steal a life raft from one of the 747s. They were successful in getting it out of the plane and home. Shortly after they took it for a float on the river, they noticed a Coast Guard helicopter coming towards them. It turned out that the chopper was homing in on the emergency locator beacon that activated when the raft was inflated. They are no longer employed at Boeing.

Here's your sign, guys. Don't get it wet; the paint might run.

Number Three Idiot of 2003

A true story out of San Francisco: A man, wanting to rob a downtown Bank of America, walked into the branch and wrote "this iz a stikkup. Put all your muny in this bag." While standing in line, waiting to give his note to the teller, he began to worry that someone had seen him write the note and might call the police before he reached the teller's window. So he left the Bank of America and crossed the street to Wells Fargo.

After waiting a few minutes in line, he handed his note to the Wells Fargo teller. She read it and, surmising from his spelling errors that he wasn't the brightest light in the harbor, told him that she could not accept his stickup note because it was written on a Bank of America deposit slip and that he would either have to fill out a Wells Fargo deposit slip or go back to Bank of America. Looking somewhat defeated, the man said, "OK" and left. He was arrested a few minutes later, as he was waiting in line back at Bank of America.

Don't bother with this guy's sign. He probably couldn't read it anyway.

Number four Idiot of 2003

A motorist was unknowingly caught in an automated speed trap that measured his speed using radar and photographed his car. He later received in the mail a ticket for $40 and a photo of his car. Instead of payment, he sent the police department a photograph of $40. Several days later, he received a letter from the police that contained another picture, this time of handcuffs. He immediately mailed in his $40.

Another sign (though this guy might be onto something worth thinking about)!

Number Five Idiot of 2003

A guy walked into a little corner store with a shotgun and demanded all of the cash from the cash drawer. After the cashier put the cash in a bag, the robber saw a bottle of Scotch that he wanted behind the counter on the shelf. He told the cashier to put it in the bag as well, but the cashier refused and said, "Because I don't believe you are over 21." The robber said he was, but the clerk still refused to give it to him because he didn't believe him.

At this point, the robber took his driver's license out of his wallet and gave it to the clerk. The clerk looked it over and agreed that the man was in fact over 21 and he put the Scotch in the bag. The robber then ran from the store with his loot. The cashier promptly called the police and gave the name and address of the robber that he got off the license. They arrested the robber two hours later.

This guy definitely needs a sign!

Idiot Number Six of 2003

A pair of Michigan robbers entered a record shop nervously waving revolvers. The first one shouted, "Nobody move!" When his partner moved, the startled first bandit shot him.

This guy doesn't need a sign, he probably figured it out himself.

Idiot Number Seven of 2003

Arkansas: Seems this guy wanted some beer pretty badly. He decided that he'd just throw a cinder block through a liquor store window, grab some booze, and run. So he lifted the cinder block and heaved it over his head at the window. The cinder block bounced back and hit the would-be thief on the head, knocking him unconscious. It seems the liquor store window was made of Plexi-Glass. The whole event was caught on videotape.

Oh, that smarts. Give him his sign.

Idiot Number Eight of 2003

Ann Arbor: The Ann Arbor News crime column reported that a man walked into a Burger King in Ypsilanti, Michigan at 12:50 A. M., flashed a gun and demanded cash. The clerk turned him down because he said he couldn't open the cash register without a food order. When the man ordered onion rings, the clerk said they weren't available for breakfast. The man, frustrated, walked away.

Sign please.

Please note that all of the above people are allowed to vote.

RDAMRAM,
What if after numerous opinions and a back disability that makes it impossible
for me to do the right stretching and bending exercises I have run out of
options. I deal with severe back pain everyday and will have to deal with that
for the rest of my life.. The pain in my hands and arms does not compare my
problem is loosing the use of my hands due to swelling, strength etc. Without my
arms and hands I can not walk with my cane! Yoga, pilates etc., I would give
anything, the exercises I need to do could brake a rod in my back...I don't know
what else to do but surgery..I have consulted four Drs. and am getting severe
neuropathy in both arms! Now I am really confused as I am due to have it in two
weeks? Before my back surgeries I tried everything from acupuncture,
injections,PT,massage,Epidurals etc. for 7 years longer than I should have and I
ended up with such a messed up back that the Lumbar fusion was a waste and the
Thoracic is minimal relief, I have rods, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc
disease, psuearthrosis blah blah. LOL the list goes on and on..So you don't
think surgery is a good thing? Where did you find the research info., I would
love to find more info to read on this matter..I thought I had covered quite a
bit but have missed some important details obviously..Help!

Thank you to all of you who responded to my post. This has been quite scary esp. seeing Noel show more or more severe symptoms lately. she is upset because she would like to know why this is happening and what is going to happen. I really cannot give her an answer and just tell her..that...i am not sure at this time.

I am trying to hope that her platelets pop back up spontaneously but I don't think that they do that ...or at least I cannot find anything like this on the net.

that darn hemorrage lump on her leg is getting quite a bit bigger now and I don't like that a bit...when we first discovered it ...i felt like a ball in there ....a bit bigger than a shooting marble...now you can cup your hand around it and if fits in your palm.....very strange....

oh well....I am feeling stronger today although I think I have gained about 20 pounds...this is not good and I have to get a GRIP....

much love and I pray this note finds everyone well....

I am asking for information also...if anyone knows more about this issue...I can take knowing...much love celeste

Rushing surgery

2008-02-24 04:15:09

TOS SURVIVORS,
I hope that with our knowledge we can find a little patience through the pain
and not become discouraged to take advantage of the wonderful options we have
besides surgery. I encourage people to try yoga, stretching, ergonomic aids,
teas, stress relief, aromatherapy. I cant deal with my pain. I am on constant
medication for TOS. Although I plan on having surgery after my son gets older I
really want people to know that sometimes people dont need surgery and regret it
later. TOS is an odd dilemma. Research shows surgery only minimizes pain for
about 5-10 yrs then when the pain comes back its alot worst and more invasive
surgery is needed. Some react very well to surgery depending on there lifestyle,
age and Doctor care. I could not deal with physical therapy. It made me flair up
on both sides and hurt. Swimming really helped circulation. The best stretches I
learned at physical therapy have proven to be the best natural bet. Chin tucks
really help. Good luck all !! and dont give up
too soon.

A Testimony of Christian Suffering

2008-02-22 13:47:16

Watchman Nee saw an undeniable vision and received a definite
commission from the Lord concerning the church, and he suffered
greatly due to his faithfulness to them. Because the vision was so
clear and the commission so real, it did not matter to him that he was
rejected, opposed, and condemned. He anticipated this response and was
determined to pay any price for the commission he had received of the
Lord. His faithfulness to this commission ultimately cost him his
life. His profound revelation combined with his selfless sufferings
issued in a rich ministry of life according to the Lord's commission
to him: the unique New Testament ministry of Christ and of the church.
Watchman Nee endured much suffering for the sake of the New Testament
ministry. Due to his absoluteness in following the Lord and his
faithfulness in fulfilling the Lord's commission, he underwent
frequent mistreatment as well as lifelong hardships. Because he
unwaveringly fought the battle for the Lord's move, he was under
constant attack from God's enemy. At the same time, he was also under
God's sovereign hand. He recognized the sovereign arrangements of God
in his environment not merely as a divinely apportioned "thorn in the
flesh," but more importantly, as a means by which God was able to deal
with him. Due to both the enemy's attacks and God's faithful
environmental dealings, Watchman Nee lived a life of suffering. The
majority of his sufferings came from five sources: poverty, ill
health, various denominations, dissenting brothers and sisters in the
local churches, and imprisonment.
In the early years of Watchman Nee's ministry, the economic situation
in China was desperate. Because of what he saw in the Word, he was
exercised to live purely and singly by faith in God not only for his
living, but also for every aspect of the Lord's work. Hence, he
steadfastly refused employment by any person or organization. In the
early days of his ministry in Shanghai, there were times when all he
had to eat each day was a little bread.
Watchman Nee was also frequently afflicted with serious ill health.
For the first eleven years of his ministry, beginning in 1922, he
suffered alone, with no wife to help him. During this time he
contracted tuberculosis and suffered acutely for several years. In
1934 at the age of thirty, however, Watchman Nee married a true "help
meet," Charity Chang, although the Lord was to give them no children.
In later years, he was also stricken with a chronic stomach disorder
as well as angina pectoris, a serious heart ailment. He was never
cured of the heart disease and could have died from it at any moment.
In fact, many times he ministered not by physical strength but by
resurrection life.
He also suffered for his belief that, according to the Bible,
denominations are wrong in that they divide the one Body of Christ.
Because his firm stand for the oneness of the Body of Christ was a
testimony against the denominations, they caused him much suffering.
Some despised, criticized, opposed, and did their best to destroy his
ministry. They also spread false rumors about him and misrepresented
him to the extent that Watchman Nee once responded, "The Watchman Nee
portrayed by them I would also condemn."
A number of brothers and sisters meeting with the local churches
became another source of suffering to Watchman Nee. He found this type
of suffering by far the most painful. Some of these believers caused a
great deal of trouble due to their dissention, immaturity,
incompetence, stubbornness, ambition for position, or rebelliousness.
Two years after the church life began to be practiced in Watchman
Nee's hometown in 1922, he was even temporarily excommunicated by his
own coworkers because of his stand for the truth of the Scriptures,
when he protested the ordination of the leading coworkers by a
denominational missionary. Although most of the believers meeting with
them sided with Watchman Nee, the Lord would not allow him to do
anything to vindicate himself. That was a deep suffering to his
natural man.
The final source of suffering was his groundless condemnation and
imprisonment. Watchman Nee was arrested during the Communist Cultural
Revolution in March 1952 and was judged, falsely condemned, and
unjustly sentenced to fifteen years imprisonment in 1956.
Watchman Nee was a man of sorrows and suffering. Along his entire path
of following the Lamb, he suffered much. Through all these sufferings,
however, he learned many lessons. These sufferings not only helped him
learn to trust the Lord; they also benefited him in dealing with his
flesh, his self, his soul, and his natural life. Due to his obedience
to these dealings, he never passed on mere teachings and doctrines,
for his messages contained the reality he had acquired through his
sufferings. The experience he gained through his suffering served as
an immeasurable help to all those under his ministry and also became a
rich heritage to all the local churches, a heritage acquired by him at
the ultimate price.
His sufferings also helped him to receive further revelation from the
Lord. Certain kinds of suffering often issued in corresponding
revelation. His sufferings thus often became the Lord's revelation to
him. He was purified, dealt with, broken, and constituted by the Holy
Spirit with the divine life through his sufferings. Through such
experiences of Christ within his sufferings, he, like Paul, was
prepared and positioned to receive the Lord's revelation.

Stephanie,
As I am disabled due to severe back disorder and two surgeries one of which left
me with a mess in my lumbar spine, I was diagnosed immediately by my
Neurologists. I did not complain I just did not know what was up and they caught
it right away. They did a number of tests but the most conclusive was the SSEP,
apparently this checks the nerve conduction to the brain. Well I failed
miserably, PT is not an option due to all of the nerve damage. Writing this is
like writing with two baseball gloves on. After consulting two other
Neurologists and my reg. Dr. it was decided that they would do surgery right
away, Sept.16.
I hope this helps and I will sure be thinking of you.
God Bless,
Kathy

I just wanted to say hi and introduce myself. My name is stephanie and
I live in Bellingham WA. I started having problems about 6-7 months
ago. I didn't have an injury, My arm just started going numb. I have
always had bad neck and shoulder pain. Just ignored it though.
I went to my dr. she did a few in office tests and is "pretty sure it's
TOS" she has started me x-rays, nothing there. Then I went for an MRI,
again nothing there. So, now she says well if you are still having
symptoms make another appointment. I am in PT once a week. It helps,
but darn do I hurt afterwards. I'm kind of at a loss as to what to do
now?! I'm starting a new job soon, I'm a single mom, I have 2 little
boys under the age of 3. I really need some advice on manageing the
pain and numbness. I have pain meds and muscle relaxers, but I won't
take them during the day. I can't function enough to take care of the
kids. I've heard yoga is good, can anyone recommend a video?

Thank you for sharing the poem you posted. It was beautiful and really made me thing about life and that it is hard but isn't all bad. It came to me at a perfect time in my day, I've been feeling down lately, sometimes it seems like I have so much on my plate at one time. I guess we all do and it's okay to feel sorry for ourselves a day or two, as long as we bounce back and start living.

Thank you again for sharing.

TOS SURVIVORS,
I'm just replying to a few emails from our group.
One person asked about getting on disability. Here's my experience. With my tos
being from work I found a wworkers comp. attorney right away. My attorney sent
me to a bunch of Dr.s my main being a neurologist. I had full testing, nerves,
mri's and ability mobility tests. Since tos will always usually come up negative
on the xrays a I knew I had tos when I did the mobility testing. When you get
tested for tos it crutial to be tested by a person with tos background and lots
of experience. I had body mechanics training to teach me how to live, clean,
drive ect. After two years on medical leave for my pain I was finally diagnosed
with tos. I was then seen by a State Board Medical Evaluator who rated me. My
rating came out to 45%/27%. Which means I cant go back and do the same work, nor
can I move most of my upper body well when and if I go back. I was awarded a
settlement 4 yrs. after hurt date and put on permanent disability after 3 years.
I recieve my disability from social security
because I worked all my life and paid into what I'm due because of work and
the fact I did the same work for 13 years.
One thing you need not to overlook,, when you enter into the workers comp.
situation you are not just being evaluated physically. They look at your past
injuries, your past jobs, eduaction, home life, your stress factors your mental
state and most of they want to know you are being honest. The problem is that
most people let the dr.s dictate to them wheat theyre condition is because most
people are not aware that they can see whatever dr. they want with tos or any
workers comp case. They try to shut you out and tell you to shut up. You have to
bother them when they, workers comp avoids you, you have have to be very strong
and dont give up. When something isnt done by your dr. or lawyer or anyone
handling your case you have to pick up the phone or it wont get done. You are
still in charge.

Hello Celeste,
That does sound scary. It sounds like the hematologist is a very nice
doctor. I hope you are able to get a good explanation.
They do have computers that do platelet counts but the hematologists
often request that a hand count be done if the platelets are low. The
machines are often not accurate in the very high and very low range, I
think. It always seems to me that it would take a long time to count to
32,000 if you were doing it by hand. I am not sure what they do, but
the laboratory technologists know what to do. It does sound kind of
crude.
Keep us informed.
Love,
Jennifer

surgery

2008-02-20 09:46:18

Hi, I am new to the group and have a few questions regarding those of you
that have had the surgery, removing the rib etc.
I have been on disability for a ,actually receiving checks for about a year
and a half. My disability is due to my back and a number of other health
issues as I did not even know I had TOS until a few months ago..I have gone
through all of the testing , final one being the SSEP? which determined (a)
confirmed what we already knew, that I had TOS (b) that the test showed the
results of someone with Peripheral and Polyneuropathy even at rest..Now I do
not have a clue what all this means except what I found on the internet. The
Neurologist was sick after I had spent another night in a hotel , so I did
not talk to him and have not since as he is still sick. I talked to my
regular Neurologist, the other was Vascular and explained that I did not
know what to do as the Vas.Neurologist told his assistant to go ahead and
schedule the surgery, she called him at home with the results.
As you can see this is kind of bizarre..I am having real reservations about
having a surgery even though I am losing more and more mobility in my hands,
more headaches, etc etc.
I am waiting for my reg. Neurologist to send me a letter explaining the
results of SSEP test and the RA results. As one Dr. was checking for TOS the
other was check for Rheumatoid Arthritis and both came back bad...Tomorrow I
see the Rheumatologist...I am so confused.
Does anyone know if there is a link between RA and TOS? I was told surgery
was my only option,I assume it is due to having the Arterial type which is
caused by the rib/collarbone creating to small of a passage for the blood
flow? If you have had the surgery I am talking about, was it as painful as
it sounds. I have had two major back fusions so can stand the pain but they
both failed so I am a bit skittish? Can you take care of yourself after the
surgery as I live alone except for my dog and she has not mastered the
laundry as of yet LOL?
Sorry this is so long but I truly need some advice from someone who has been
there. It sounds like so many are still suffering with it that is why I was
curious about the surgery..I have so many other health problems my 1st
Neurologist is worried about the surgery but is also partners with the
Vascular Neuro. so I am in good hands.
Thanks for your help
Kathy

re: the sonogram

2008-02-19 11:27:35

hello ,

I spoke to the reg physicians office yesterday and the nurse told me that the radiology report said...spontaneous hemmoraging in the the fatty tissue of her leg. they advised me to call the hemotologists office and report.

I spoke to the hematologist later in the day.....she did ask if she had my permission to speak to the card and reg physician... I told her no problem. She was not sure why this happened....yes we could be going to dangerous territory....I guess everyone knows that.

She is going to have Noels platelets tested again. on march 28th they were 27,000...which they appear to be going down 1,000 points a month. She said she would liked them rechecked to make sure they haven't dropped to about 8,000....I don't think this has happened and neither did she...but she said it would be that one case that she didn't double check that this would happen in....it could happen by what she says....we have been told this before...I am usually optimistic about these things....and I am sure if we have to have the bw hassle...it will all be fine....fine for Noel...

She also said there might not be much difference between 32,000 and 29,000....because it could depend on who is reading the tests and counting the platelets....wouldn't they have a computer doing that? I thought that sounded rather crude but there must be a way that the lab techs do this.....LOL

because she does feel that this platelet dropping could happen she did ask me if I would want to know? like if her platelets have dropped and things could be getting scarier....and I told her yes..

she told me some people don't want to know as things progress and that she always asks....I thought that was thoughtfull of the patients and parents feelings...she is a very nice and good person who can speak the truth but not freak you out...I like her..hmm did i mention that.

I guess that is it.

Has anyone else had to deal with a low platelet problem?

while still having the high hematocrit? they end up having to use special tubing so noels blood does not clot in the tube...I am going to ask if this could effect the platelet reading?

hope all is well...love celeste

Hi,
Thank you everyone for all your support. IT really
lifted us up. We had just one of those days when I
wrote last. We were in the wonderful state of denial
about having to go back on the central line and
someone left a detailed message on the machine about
scheduling surgery for a line placement etc. Which I
played during dinner and we just had a meltdown. Well
surgery is scheduled for may 26th in Denver.
The good news is that a coworker found an indoor water
park and fun center in Idaho about a 4 hour drive and
we hope to spend the weekend there. The hotel is on
the same property and you get a 24 hour wristband. So
Trey can swim, rest, swim agian in 86 degree comfort!
So we have that to look forward to. Now it's not
Hawaii but it will do nicely!!!

"If Nobody Cared"

2008-02-17 18:48:24

If nobody smiled and nobody cared
and nobody helped us along.
If every moment looked after itself
and good things always went to the strong;
If nobody cared just a little about you
and nobody cared about me,
and we stood alone, in the battle of life,
what a dreary old world this would be.
Live is sweet, just because of the friends we have made
and the things which in common we share,
We want to live on, not because of ourselves
but because of the people who care.
It is doing and giving for somebody else
on which all of life's splendor depends.
The joy of this world, when you've summed it all up
is found in the making of friends.

hearing stage; you will need an Attorney. I have TOCS and can
barely walk due to having no cartiledge in my knees. I only got
